Daily Service: Look up (or keep looking up)
Keep looking up as a therapy for looking down too much. I noted several comments and observations about it the instantaneous nature of modern communications being the antithesis of helpful. Are there more earthquakes now compared to 100 years ago when you just didn’t hear about them because we didn’t all have cellphones capturing and relaying in the interest of keeping us informed? Same goes for crime, corruption, human exploitation, and a host of other modern issues. They haven’t increased but our awareness and angst have. Simply put we have all become bad news junkies.
I propose a Biblical solution. Turn off the news, stop looking for the next crisis and ask God to give you a heavenly perspective.
Philippians 4:8-9 (ESV) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Luke 21:25-28 (ESV) “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Matthew 14:28-31 (ESV) And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
