Daily Service: Names of God

Day 8 Names of God

Before anyone jumps me about One God, hear me out.  The Bible is God’s Word right? In God’s Word we find that God was called many things throughout by people who needed Him in a specific way. Here are just a few and where you can find them. I found a wonderful picture online this morning that will give you dozens more.  My point is indeed there is only One God.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (ESV) “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

I have a great series of books on my bookshelf – the All the series by Herbert Lockyer, DD. This information is a brief snip from All the Divine Names and Titles in the Bible

Elohim – Plurality in Unity

Elohim is used 3,000 times in the Bible, 2300 of those refer directly to God, the others in general refer to gods(little g).

El – the strong one. Some scholars believe the Elohim we are familiar with has this as its root word.

El Shaddai- The Almighty All-Sufficient God

Jehovah The Eternal, Ever-Loving One

Jehovah-Hoseenu – The Lord Our Maker (Psalm 95:6)

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord will Provide (Genesis 22:14)

Jehovah Rophi – The Lord, The Physician (Jeremiah 8:22)

Jehovah Nissi – The Lord our Banner (Exodus 17:15,16)

Emmanuel – God is with us (Matthew 1:23)

This book is a reference book that examines the names of God in the Bible and is summed up in this: God is to you what you need him to be.  This is not sacrilege, this is not me saying there are many ways to heaven, there are not.

The Holy Spirit will reveal himself to you if you ask God to live in you and you actually, really mean it.

Feel free to comment, add you own favorite God name and the scripture you found it in.
