Daily Service: #Itching ears

It is a sad reality that most of today’s most influential and popular preachers and televangelists do not perform and preach exegetically. The Scripture speaks about this phenomenon in the book of 2 Timothy 4:3: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” As a contemporary pastor or preacher, one can find that it is a temptation to preach emotional or inspirational messages that are more universally accepted. But if we are going to be faithful to God and His Word, then we must be willing to do the necessary studying of the context to understand the original author’s intent.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Do you find yourself looking around for other churches if you are getting uncomfortable with the preaching?  That’s what the passage in 2 Timothy was talking about.  I for one, want to feel the preacher stepping in my business and telling me to get right with the Lord.
