Daily Bible Reading: Leviticus 18-20
Leviticus 19:1-4 (ESV) And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the LORD your God.
19:1-2. This chapter is not addressed to a few ascetics but to the entire assembly of Israel, the whole nation. The underlying motivation for holiness is expressed in what can be considered the motto of Leviticus—Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. This statement weds ethics to theology forever. Human morality must ultimately rest on the unchanging nature of God. “Every biblical statement about God carries with it an implied demand upon men to imitate Him in daily living” (R.E. Clements, “Leviticus,” in The Broadman Bible Commentary, 2:51). God called Israel to be a holy nation (Ex. 19:6).The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty.
