Daily Service: Unity in the Body of Christ

I’m sure you’ve heard me carrying on about this for some time.  Are you a Christian (a follower of Christ) If you identify with any church organization above your relationship with Christ, I submit that you are not following Christ.

I am currently reading the 6th book in the Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister “Into the long dark night”.  As Corrie travels east by train (It’s 1863 and the Civil War is tearing the country apart) she meets a nun.  The sister identifies herself as being of the Unity Order.  She started this as an experiment within the Roman Catholic Church because she felt called to remove the division in the body of believers, starting with her own church.  She is facing an uphill battle even inside the church. Her Bishop doesn’t agree with her but permits her to continue.  I’m not going to repeat two wonderful chapters, but this book makes my point clear.  I also had an inspection today where the mother-in-law was said to be “very religious” by the owner.  I wondered aloud if she had ever actually read a Bible (see previous posts on this also).

You need a relationship with Christ, first and foremost. You also need to part of a local body of believers because you need fellowship, accountability, and growth, giving and getting as necessary.  The problem always becomes man interpreting God’s intent for others without those others checking them with the Word.

1 Corinthians 1:10 (NKJV) Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Psalm 133:1 (NKJV) Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Colossians 3:13-17 (NKJV) bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

You think about that. Amen!
