Daily Service: Burned out? God says why?
I just finished the last book in a series by Sharon Srock. Sisters by Design is the second set of books centered around women of faith looking out for each other. Read my reviews on the blog
. The last book is about the Pastor and his wife that this whole series centers around. It seems that while their twin sons were looking for their original marriage certificate for an anniversary present, they were planning they also found a divorce filing. Without giving away the whole plot, the Pastor is the shepherd of a 500-member church, and he is handling it all himself. His wife is his partner and she plays the piano for all of his services but he has overworked himself in the ministry so much that he has ignored his wife and sons for a while. A fellow pastor (from the other book series by the way) comes along side as a Christian counselor and he tells the pastor the story of Moses when his father in law told him he was taking too much on. Long story short, you can sometimes outrun your guardian angel, or to put it more succinctly you can forget that God orders your life, not you.
Exodus 18:13-19 (ESV) The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening. When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?” And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.” Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God,
