Daily Service – Honor your Parents (third in a series)
I am gathering specific verses about specific roles in the Christian world view. I say that because other cultures, religions, and world views differ greatly in these regards, specifically where it concerns women and children. God says honor your parents.
Ephesians 6:1-3 (ESV) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Exodus 20:12 (ESV) “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
I know that when we are young, we have no problem obeying, loving, and trusting our parents. This is exactly the relationship God wants with you. The difficulty comes when we start growing up and start growing away from our parents. We grow away from God in the same way. Read the passage again. It is the first commandment of the original 10 commandments that actually promises something for obedience. I think that is pretty important
Appreciate them. You honor your father and mother when you are thankful for all they have done for you. You can show your appreciation by valuing their guidance. (Proverbs 7:1, 2; 23:26) The Bible encourages you to view your parents as your “glory,” that is, to be proud of them.—Proverbs 17:6.
