Daily Service: Who or What is your God?

Matthew 19:21-22 (NKJV) Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Updated for Volume 10

I just read the story of a young rich powerful Jewish lord who self-confidently asked Jesus what he must do to gain heaven. Jesus recites the commandments, and the young man says he has kept the commandments. Jesus says “one thing you lack. Go and sell all your goods, give to the poor and come follow me. (Paraphrased from Take This Cup by Brock and Bodie Thoene in the Jerusalem Chronicles)

You can read the rest of the story in Matthew 19: 16-22 but in a nutshell, Jesus was not saying it was bad to be rich. He was saying it was bad to make riches your god.

Colossians 3:2 (NKJV) Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Remember Job:

Job 1:21 (NKJV) And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

You should not be worried about too many things or objects here on earth. Sow your seed in heaven.

Reminds me of something I saw on Pinterest and possibly posted.  If you have means, do not build a bigger wall, build a bigger table.  I think I can speak for most Christians when I say that we could all do better about seeing to the needs of others instead of ourselves.
