Daily Bible Reading: Joel 1-3, Obadiah 1

Book: Joel

Author: Joel, son of Pethuel (1:1).  Little else is known of him.

Date: Unclear but possibly just before the Babylonian invasion of Judah in 586 BC.

In ten words or less: Locust plague pictures God’s judgement on His sinful people.

Joel 1:14-15 (NKJV) Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; Gather the elders And all the inhabitants of the land Into the house of the LORD your God, And cry out to the LORD. Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is at hand; It shall come as destruction from the Almighty.

Book: Obadiah

Author: Obadiah (1:1), perhaps a person by that name or a unnamed prophet for whom “Obadiah” (meaning “servant of God”) is a title.

Date: Unclear but probably within 30 years after Babylon’s invasion of Judah in 586 BC.

In ten words or less: Edom will suffer for participating in Jerusalem’s destruction.

Obadiah 1:6 (NKJV) “Oh, how Esau shall be searched out! How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!
