Lifting up God’s people
Updated for Volume 11
I will do this in two sittings because I want you to consider both of these commandments carefully. Jesus condensed the Law (500 plus individual requirements) to the 10 commandments Moses carried down the mountain, then He made it 2 that sum up all of them. So here is the whole passage and then we will talk about the first one.
Matthew 22:34-40 (NKJV) But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.‘ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
The main point I want to make about the first commandment is the setup in the verses before it. The lawyer did not really want the answer, they were trying to trap him with his words. But as before Jesus knew their hearts, and His answer pricks their hearts. Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart, ALL your soul, ALL your mind. No double mindedness here. He is judging their motive and actions. Like the rich young ruler, they are condemned because they will not change.
