Daily Service: And if God is for us
Note the song reference above – Chris Tomlin sings Romans 8:31
Our pastor brought a beautiful message this morning titled “Eyes to see.”
While he was teaching a memory occurred to me. I heard a quote from Trey Gowdy on his podcast where he said that we only get the bad news from the media and that the bad is just a sliver of the whole truth. The hard part is that bad news sells newspapers, good news does not. So your world view may be just as skewed as Elisha’s servant when he sees an army arrayed against them. Elisha shakes his head and prays that God will open the servant’s eyes (spiritual eyes that is), and he sees the mountain filled with horses and chariots of fire that are on his side.
2 Kings 6:16-17 (AMP) [Elisha] answered, Fear not; for those with us are more than those with them. Then Elisha prayed, Lord, I pray You, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
2 Kings 6:16-17 (NKJV) So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Adam Clarke’s Commentary – 2 Kings 6:16-17
For they that be with us are more, etc.—What astonishing intercourse had this man with heaven! It seems the whole heavenly host had it in commission to help him.
Lord—open his eyes—Where is heaven? Is it not above, beneath, around us? And were our eyes open as were those of the prophet’s servant, we should see the heavenly host in all directions. The horses and chariots of fire were there, before the eyes of Elisha’s servant were opened.
Bible Knowledge Commentary – 2 Kings 6:16-17
6:15-17. Since Gehazi had been dismissed as a disobedient servant and “leper” (5:27), the Naaman story must follow this one if Elisha’s servant here is Gehazi. Or this servant may be someone who replaced Gehazi. Early the next morning the servant was terrified to see that the whole city was under the Arameans’ control, or so he thought. He returned in a frenzy to Elisha and nervously asked, What shall we do? The servant’s anxiety reflected his lack of understanding and trust in the Lord which, one would think, Elisha’s previous revelations would have changed.
Elisha was not at all disturbed by the present situation. He encouraged his aide to stop fearing, and assured him that they had behind them a force superior to that of the enemy. Elisha then asked the Lord to enable his servant to see this host and the Lord did so. He gave the servant the ability to see the normally unseen world of invisible spirits (angels) that are constantly ready to do God’s bidding (cf. Gen. 28:12). The hills around Dothan were filled with superior horses and chariots. These appeared as fiery agents of God suggesting to the servant their superterrestrial origin (cf. 2 Kings 2:11). The Lord had surrounded the armies of Aram and was in control.
Eyes Opened, Luke 24:31
Luke 24:31 (NKJV) Then their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
Are you struggling to see the good in the world around you? Ask God to open your spiritual eyes to see glory of His Might.
