Remember that I have talked about the Old Testament being the history and prophesy that leads us to Christ?

Listen to God’s law. I’m not hitting tithing again, but it is involved.

Deuteronomy 26:1-3 (KJV) And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein; That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name there. And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which the LORD sware unto our fathers for to give us.

This scripture says bring me you first fruits. It doesn’t say “I’ll take whatever is left over when you’re done. Folks God said you leave that for the gleaners (the poor folks that come along after the harvest and get what they can).

Leviticus 19:9-10 (KJV) And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God. Okay so I did hit the tithe thing again. God says Give me your best.

Now come forward to the New Testament – how is first fruits used?

– Romans 8:23 states “And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit…” As in other passages, Paul is using “first fruits” as a metaphor for the first appearance of a promised blessing. Here, it is the Holy Spirit, the “helper” who Jesus promised in John 14:26. The very first followers of Jesus were also the very first to experience the blessing of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit—they received the “first fruits” of the Holy Spirit’s work in the lives of believers.

I’m challenging you to give to God first, your goods, your money, your time, your attention. First, not last.
