Daily Bible Reading: Proverbs 13-16
Proverbs 13:3 (NKJV) He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
Proverbs 14:1-3 (NKJV) The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands. He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him. In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, But the lips of the wise will preserve them.
Proverbs 15:1-4 (NKJV) A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 16:26-29 (NKJV) The person who labors, labors for himself, for his hungry mouth drives him on. An ungodly man digs up evil, and it is on his lips like a burning fire. A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends. A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him in a way that is not good.
If these four verses are viewed as proverbs that describe ungodly people, it appears to reveal the basic selfishness of human nature. While labor is a good thing, the person who labors without an awareness of or commitment to a higher purpose is performing an essentially selfish act. [Apostolic Study Bible]
