Open Your Bible
Updated for Volume 14
First and foremost because God says so:
Psalm 119:11-12 (NKJV) Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! Blessed are You, O LORD! Teach me Your statutes!
And practicality. Though we now can have the bible on our phones and tablets, and you can pretty much even take a printed Bible wherever you go, memorizing scripture gives you a constant measuring stick when you encounter trials in your life.
A dear friend called me this morning and shared a clear victory over her own will when it opposes God’s will. She told me that this phrase from Luke 22:42 “not my will but thine be done” had always made her fearful of what God might ask of her, but in her devotions this morning it came up again, but it was a sense of wellbeing that washed over her as she looked back over difficult points in her life and God reminded her that He had always been there and she always did what He would have her do.
Luke 22:42 (NKJV) saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
I recently read a historical Christian romance set in Texas (Tomorrow’s First Light by Naomi Rawlings)that was recommended by fellow blogger Christian Fiction Girl. The book centered around “Two are better than one” and it kept coming up as they progressed through the book and it helped them reach what you would call a happy ending.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NKJV) Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
This one just got added after reading “40 Verses to ignite your faith” by Laurie Polich Short. No one will ever see God. But if they see God’s love reflected in our lives, they will encounter God on a personal level.
1 John 4:12 NKJV No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.[1]
[1] The New King James Version (1 Jn 4:12). (1982). Thomas Nelson.
So that is why I post memory verses and promote scripture memorization. The idea is that when you run up against a problem, you will think of God first, not the trouble.
