Daily Bible Reading: Ezekiel 44-45

Ezekiel 44:23-24 (NKJV) And they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean. In controversy, they shall stand as judges and judge it according to My judgments. They shall keep My laws and My statutes in all My appointed meetings, and they shall hallow My Sabbaths.

Ezekiel 45:1-5 NKJV Moreover, when you divide the land by lot into inheritance, you shall set apart a district for the Lord, a holy section of the land; its length shall be twenty-five thousand cubits, and the width ten thousand. It shall be holy throughout its territory all around. Of this, there shall be a square plot for the sanctuary, five hundred by five hundred rods, with fifty cubits around it for an open space. So this is the district you shall measure: twenty-five thousand cubits long and ten thousand wide; in it shall be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place.  It shall be a holy section of the land, belonging to the priests, the ministers of the sanctuary, who come near to minister to the Lord; it shall be a place for their houses and a holy place for the sanctuary. An area twenty-five thousand cubits long and ten thousand wide shall belong to the Levites, the ministers of the temple; they shall have twenty chambers as a possession.[1]

45:1–6. In the division of the land, Israel is to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits (about 8.3 miles) long and 20,000 cubits (about 6.6 miles) wide. Within this land area will be the temple complex Ezekiel had just described (Chaps. 40–43). This rectangle of land will be divided into two equal portions, each about 8.3 miles long and about 3.3 miles wide. The first portion, which will be located in the sanctuary, will be allotted to the priests for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary. The second portion will be allotted to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in. Instead of being scattered throughout Israel as they were earlier (Josh. 21:1–42) the priests and Levites will reside near their place of ministry.

The rectangle formed by the priests’ and Levites’ portions was converted into a square with the addition of land for the city of Jerusalem itself. The city is to cover an area 5,000 cubits (about 1.7 miles) wide and 25,000 cubits (about 8.3 miles) long, adjoining the sacred portion. This will then be subdivided into the city proper, grazing land, and farmland (cf. Ezek. 48:15–18).[2]
