Daily Service: Bible Version?

DAY 64

What version do you read and why?

First, be aware that some newer translations take passages out of the Bible in areas that weaken the message doctrinally.  I tend to use the Geneva Bible and KJV, but sometimes use the Amplified to help me understand a passage.

I have included several translations and the Bible Knowledge Commentary for this verse.

Acts 9:22 (BBE)
But Saul went on increasing in power, and the Jews in Damascus were not able to give answers to the arguments by which he made it clear that Jesus was the Christ.

Acts 9:22 (GenevaBible)
But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, confirming that this was that Christ.

Acts 9:22 (KJV)
But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

Acts 9:22 (ASV)
But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews that dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is the Christ.

Acts 9:22 (AMP)
But Saul increased all the more in strength, and continued to confound and put to confusion the Jews who lived in Damascus by comparing and examining evidence and proving that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah). (I like this translation best for this verse because it makes the passage clearer)

 Acts 9:22 (ESV)
But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ.

Saul used his theological training to good advantage in pressing home the truth that the Lord Jesus is the Messiah. He had gone to Damascus to persecute the church; he ended up preaching Jesus. What a contrast! What grace! No wonder the Damascus Jews were baffled (synechynnen, “bewildered, confused,” from syncheō, used in the NT only in 2:6; 9:22; 21:27, 31).

8/14/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 95-97, 2 Corinthians 13, Proverbs 14

2 Corinthians 13:4-5 (NKJV)
For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you.
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you are disqualified.

 Psalm 95:6-8 (NKJV)
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice:
“Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

Psalm 96:4-5 (NKJV)
For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens.

Daily Service: Holy Ghost?

DAY 63

HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST SINCE YOU BELIEVED?

This is for my young Christian friend at the Naval Hospital. I know you search the scriptures daily and I know we left a conversation open, so I would like to direct your attention to Acts 19.  Please note that these young disciples were believers, but they had not heard that the Holy Ghost had been poured out at Jerusalem.

 Acts 19:1-7 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.

8/13/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 92-94, 2 Corinthians 12, Proverbs 13

Psalm 92:1-5 (NKJV)
A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day.

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night,
On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound.
For You, LORD, have made me glad through Your work;

I will triumph in the works of Your hands.
O LORD, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

8/11/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 89-91, 2 Corinthians 11, Proverbs 11

Psalm 89:1-2 (KJV)
I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

Psalm 89:31-33 (KJV)
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

8/10/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 86-88, 2 Corinthians 10, Proverbs 10

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NKJV)
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

8/9/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 83-85, 2 Corinthians 9, Proverbs 9

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NKJV)
But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

Psalm 84:4-5 (KJV)
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.

8/8/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 80-82, Proverbs 8

Psalm 80:12-14 (NKJV)
Why have You broken down her hedges, So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit?
The boar out of the woods uproots it, And the wild beast of the field devours it.
Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts; Look down from heaven and see, And visit this vine

80:12-14b. However, this prosperity had withered. By a rhetorical question the writer lamented that God had broken down the walls of the nation to enable others to plunder her. The Hebrew word for “walls” (also used in 89:40; Isa. 5:5) does not mean city walls but walls around vineyards. The enemies who plundered Israel are here described as boars and beasts.

The figure of Israel as a vine may have been prompted by Genesis 49:22. It is used also in Isaiah 5:1-7; 27:2-6; Jeremiah 2:21; 12:10; Hosea 10:1. Jesus spoke of Himself as a Vine (John 15:1, 5) for He, being the promised Seed, represented and fulfilled God’s purposes for Israel. Where she failed, He succeeded.

8/7/18 Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 78-79, 2 Corinthians 8, Proverbs 7

God cannot help you if you walk away from Him

 Psalm 78:41-42 (NKJV)
Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.
They did not remember His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,

 2 Corinthians 8:9 (NKJV)
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
