Daily Bible Reading: Luke 13-14

Luke 13:18-19 (NKJV) Then He said, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?  It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.”

13:18-21. This passage is actually a hinge between Jesus’ teaching of the multitudes (12:54-13:21) and His teaching about the people of the kingdom (13:22-17:10). Some feel that in these brief parables about the Mustard Seed (a mustard tree, from a tiny seed, grows as tall as 12-15 feet in one season!) and the Yeast Jesus was teaching something positive about the kingdom. It seems better, however, to understand these parables as teaching something undesirable. Like pervading yeast, evil will enter the Age and become all-pervasive. This seems to be true since Luke placed this teaching immediately after the synagogue leader’s rejection of Jesus’ work on the Sabbath.

Luke 14:34-35 (NKJV) “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?  It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Daily Bible Reading: Luke 11-12

Luke 11:1-4 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Jesus’ Teaching About Prayer (11:1-13)

11:1. Jesus prayed at every major crisis point in His life. He prayed at the time of His baptism (3:21), and at the time of the choosing of His disciples (6:12). He was often alone praying (5:169:18) and also prayed with others around (9:28-29). He prayed for Simon (22:32), and He prayed in the garden before His betrayal (22:40-44). He even prayed on the cross (23:46). One of His disciples, impressed with Jesus’ life of prayer, asked Jesus to teach them to pray.

Luke 12:22-23 (NKJV) Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.
