Daily Service: Hallelujah

Daily Service: Hallelujah – Universal in all languages

Did you know that Hallelujah or Alleluia is common to most known languages and needs no translation to be understood by many?

Hallelujah Definition

Hallelujah is an exclamation of worship or a call to praise transliterated from two Hebrew words meaning “Praise ye the Lord” or “Praise Yahweh.” Some Bible versions render the phrase “Praise the Lord.” The Greek form of the word is alleluia.

Nowadays, hallelujah is quite popular as an expression of praise, but it has been an important utterance in church and synagogue worship since ancient times.

Hallelujah in the Old Testament

Hallelujah is found 24 times in the Old Testament, but only in the book of Psalms. It appears in 15 different Psalms, between 104-150, and in almost every case at the opening and/or closing of the Psalm. These passages are called the “Hallelujah Psalms.”

Revelation 19:1 (ESV) After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,

Memory Verse 1 John 5:14

1 John 5:14

Now this is the confidence we have before Him: whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. —1 John 5:14

This verse and the next offer one of the Bible’s best definitions of prayer. It’s easy to memorize when you notice how the verses unfold and expand. The meaning and marvel of prayer grows deeper and more practical as phrase builds upon phrase. Prayer is…

  • Coming before Him.
  • Coming before Him with confidence.
  • Coming before Him with confidence and asking.
  • Coming before Him with confidence and asking according to His will.
  • Coming before Him with confidence and asking according to His will, knowing that He hears us.

Writing near the end of the Bible and at the end of the apostolic age, the apostle John wanted us to know something about the biblical promises related to prayer. They are all conditioned by God’s will. In his Gospel, for example, John quoted Jesus as saying, “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:14 NIV). Anything is a huge word, and perhaps some of John’s readers had taken it a bit too literally. So in 1 John 5:14, he reminds us that the promise of answered prayer is dependent on the phrase “according to His will.”

From the perspective of infinity, our God knows what’s best from beginning to end. He sees the outcomes of every chain reaction in life. He knows how the dominoes fall and how the cookies crumble. His perfect, providential oversight makes no mistakes and always results in the best for His children.

Our vantage point is as limited as a person who’s fallen into a hole and can only see a circle of sky above him. We don’t always know the landscape, and we can’t see distant vistas. So we pray earnestly and ask God for our needs, our wants, our wishes, and our desires. But we always pray with the attitude, “if it be Your will.” In that we can have total confidence.

Sometimes when I purchase roses or plants from a nursery catalog, there’s a little box on the order form saying, “If we are out of the item you want, may we substitute one of equal or greater value?” I always say no, because I don’t think the workers in the warehouse know what’s best for my garden. But with the Lord we should always say, “Yes, Lord! You may substitute. You may grant an alternative answer of equal or greater value. I trust You with substitutions.”

The purpose of prayer is to get God’s will done…. The greatest prayer any one can offer is “Thy will be done.” It will be offered in a thousand different forms, with a thousand details, as needs arise daily. But every true prayer comes under those four words. —S. D. Gordon

Daily Bible Reading 17 December 2018

12/17/18 Daily Bible Reading: Jonah 2-4, Revelation 13, Proverbs 17

Jonah 2:1-2 (NKJV) Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.

Revelation 13:1-5 (NKJV) Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months.

Tis the Season

Okay, one more tonight and I will check up in the morning.

Many fundamentalist Christians do not hold with celebrating pagan holidays such as Easter, Halloween, and Christmas.  Now Halloween I will agree with fundamentally because I do not see any advantage celebrating death as a holiday.

Now Easter and Christmas are Christian based celebrations which were commingled with pagan festivals in the days of Emperor Constantine of Rome who decided the way to quell the masses was to adopt Christianity but celebrate on Pagan holidays to make it all palatable to the most people.  What Christmas and Easter have become are commercialized events to get us to spend more money.

On the other hand, when are the most non Christians or non practicing Christians most receptive and indeed vulnerable to the gospel message?  I can openly celebrate the birth and death of Christ in most places, even where Christianity is in the minority and sometimes outright banned.

So I say Tis the Season to reach out to the lost and destitute, give them a Christian hand up! And sing some really good Gospel songs like Joy to the World, It came upon a midnight clear, and Joyful, Joyful Lord we adore Thee.

You think about it. Amen

God Loves YOU!

From Daily Service Volume 2

GOD LOVES YOU!

You’ve probably heard this before, maybe even here within the past few weeks, but God laid this burden on my heart tonight as I was driving home with my wife.

God Loves you. God laid down his life in place of yours. God loves you so much and He knows everything, and He loves you anyway.

God is not willing that any should perish but have everlasting life.

But you should read the rest of the passage after the oft quoted John 3:16. It says that you must believe (action verb) in order to be saved. Basic faith gives us all the ability to believe in Christ and act on that knowledge. What then? What do you do after you believe?

Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus and you will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

And if you did all that start walking with God. If you don’t see your life undergoing a change as you walk in the presence of God, you might have missed something. If your faith in Christ does not radically change your world view you are definitely missing something.

Prayer, fellowship, Bible Study should make you hungry for more.

What you need to hear

I had an conversation with my oldest son (we have 2 boys, 1 girl, all grown) on the way back to our house for Sunday dinner.  I told him that some of the blogs I follow have thousands of followers and get hundreds of likes per post.  Now, I’m just getting started but I was getting the impression that no one wants to read me. My son observed that many of these blogs are incredibly popular because the say what people want to hear. “Your problem Dad, is that you are telling them what they need to hear and sometimes that means that they will pass you by.”

There is a passage in the New Testament of my Bible that refers to people with itching hears going after speakers that make them feel good.

2 Timothy 4:3 NIV New International Version
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

I am going to try to make my blog look more appealing but I will not change the Gospel message and I will not cease to encourage you to holiness and a closer walk with God.

Okay I’ll connect all of these posts when I get home and get on a computer.

In prayer this morning before service, I asked God what he wanted me to do. The Sunday school lesson was the 5th in a series our pastor has been working on was titled what’s next.

So I challenge you especially if you name yourself Christian to look around you.  Who do you know amongst your family, friends, coworkers that might be feeling about blue and lonely this holiday season? Offer them the love and grace that God granted you and tier them that there is hope.
