C.H. Spurgeon – All of Grace

Jesus has borne the death penalty on our behalf. Behold
the wonder! There He hangs upon the cross! This is the
greatest sight you will ever see. Son of God and Son of Man,
there He hangs, bearing pains unutterable, the just for the
unjust, to bring us to God. Oh, the glory of that sight! The
innocent punished! The Holy One condemned! The Everblessed
made a curse! The infinitely glorious put to a
shameful death! The more I look at the sufferings of the Son
of God, the more sure I am that they must meet my case.
Why did He suffer, if not to turn aside the penalty from us?
If, then, He turned it aside by His death, it is turned aside,
and those who believe in Him need not fear it. It must be so,
that since expiation is made, God is able to forgive without
shaking the basis of His throne, or in the least degree blotting
the statute book. Conscience gets a full answer to her
tremendous question. The wrath of God against iniquity,
whatever that may be, must be beyond all conception terrible.
Well did Moses say, “Who knoweth the power of thine
anger?” Yet when we hear the Lord of glory cry, “Why hast
thou forsaken me?” and see Him yielding up the ghost, we
feel that the justice of God has received abundant vindication
by obedience so perfect and death so terrible, rendered by so
divine a person. If God himself bows before His own law,
what more can be done? There is more in the atonement by
way of merit, than there is in all human sin by way of demerit.

Fox’s Book of Martyrs

https://www.biblestudytools.com/history/foxs-book-of-martyrs/

Edited by William Byron Forbush This is a book that will never die — one of the great English classics. . . . Reprinted here in its most complete form, it brings to life the days when “a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid,” “climbed the steep ascent of heaven, ‘mid peril, toil, and pain.” “After the Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early Protestant sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our time, it is still a living force. It is more than a record of persecution. It is an arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of edification.”

Fox’s Book of Martyrs is in the public domain and may be freely used and distributed.

Persecution of Zisca Part 6
A merchant of Prague, going to Breslau, in Silesia, happened to lodge in the same inn with several priests. Entering into conversation upon the subject of religious controversy, he passed many encomiums upon the martyred John Huss, and his doctrines. The priests taking umbrage at this, laid an information against him the next morning, and he was committed to prison as a heretic. Many endeavors were used to persuade him to embrace the Roman Catholic faith, but he remained steadfast to the pure doctrines of the reformed Church. Soon after his imprisonment, a student of the university was committed to the same jail; when, being permitted to converse with the merchant, they mutually comforted each other. On the day appointed for execution, when the jailer began to fasten ropes to their feet, by which they were to be dragged through the streets, the student appeared quite terrified, and offered to abjure his faith, and turn Roman Catholic if he might be saved. The offer was accepted, his abjuration was taken by a priest, and he was set at liberty. A priest applying to the merchant to follow the example of the student, he nobly said, “Lose no time in hopes of my recantation, your expectations will be vain; I sincerely pity that poor wretch, who has miserably sacrificed his soul for a few more uncertain years of a troublesome life; and, so far from having the least idea of following his example, I glory in the very thoughts of dying for the sake of Christ.” On hearing these words, the priest ordered the executioner to proceed, and the merchant being drawn through the city was brought to the place of execution, and there burnt.

Psalm 78

Exposition
Explanatory Notes and Quaint Sayings
Hints to the Village Preacher
Other Works

TITLE. Maschil of Asaph. This is rightly entitled an instructive Psalm. It is not a mere recapitulation of important events in Israelitish history but is intended to be viewed as a parable setting forth the conduct and experience of believers of all ages. It is a singular proof of the obtuseness of mind of many professors that they will object to sermons and expositions upon the historical parts of Scripture as if they contained no instruction in spiritual matters: were such persons truly enlightened by the Spirit of God, they would perceive that all Scripture is profitable, and would blush at their own folly in undervaluing any portion of the inspired volume.

DIVISION. The unity is well maintained throughout, but for the reader’s convenience, we may note that Ps 78:1-8 may be viewed as a preface, setting forth the psalmist’s object in the epic he is composing. From Ps 78:9-41 the theme is Israel in the wilderness; then an account of the Lord’s preceding goodness towards his people in bringing them out of Egypt by plagues and wonders, Ps 78:42-52. The history of the tribes is resumed at Ps 78:53 and continued to Ps 78:66, where we reach the time of the removal of the ark to Zion and the transference of the leadership of Israel from Ephraim to Judah, which is rehearsed in a song from Ps 78:67-72.

Verse 46. He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar and their labor unto the locust. Different sorts of devourers ate up every green herb and tree. What one would not eat another did. What they expected from the natural fertility of the soil, and what they looked for from their own toil, they saw devoured before their eyes by an insatiable multitude against whose depredation no defense could be found. Observe in the text that the Lord did it all—” he sent, ” “he gave, “he destroyed, ” he gave up, “etc.; whatever the second agent may be, the direct hand of the Lord is in every national visitation.

Faith’s Checkbook

September 9
Fear Has Its Place
Happy is the man that feareth alway. (Proverbs 28:14)
The fear of the Lord is the beginning and the foundation of all true religion. Without a solemn awe and
reverence of God, there is no foothold for the more brilliant virtues. He whose soul does not worship
will never live in holiness.
He is happy and feels a jealous fear of doing wrong. Holy fear looks not only before it leaps, but even
before it moves. It is afraid of error, afraid of neglecting duty, afraid of committing sin. It fears ill
company, loose talk, and questionable policy, This does not make a man wretched, but it brings him
happiness. The watchful sentinel is happier than the soldier who sleeps at his post. He who foreseeth
evil and escapes it is happier than he who walks carelessly on and is destroyed.
Fear of God is a quiet grace that leads a man along a choice road, of which it is written, “No lion
shall be there, neither shall any ravenous beast go up thereon.” Fear of the very appearance of evil is
a purifying principle, which enables a man, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to keep his garments
unspotted from the world. Solomon had tried both worldliness and holy fear: in the one he found
vanity, in the other happiness. Let us not repeat his trial but abide by his verdict.

Today’s Theme Song: Redeemed

Artist: Big Daddy Weave album: “Love Come To Life” (2012)

“Redeemed”

Seems like all I could see was the struggle
Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past
Bound up in shackles of all my failures
Wondering how long is this gonna last
Then You look at this prisoner and say to me “son
Stop fighting a fight that’s already been won”

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be
I am redeemed, I’m redeemed

All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, “Child lift up your head”
I remember, oh God, You’re not done with me yet

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be

Because I don’t have to be the old man inside of me
‘Cause his day is long dead and gone
Because I’ve got a new name, a new life, I’m not the same
And a hope that will carry me home

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, ’cause I’m not who I used to be

I am redeemed, You set me free
So I’ll shake off these heavy chains
Wipe away every stain, yeah, I’m not who I used to be
Oh, God, I’m not who I used to be
Jesus, oh I’m not who I used to be
‘Cause I am redeemed
Thank God, redeemed
Thank God, redeemed
