Daily Service: Names of God

Day 8 Names of God

Before anyone jumps me about One God, hear me out.  The Bible is God’s Word right? In God’s Word we find that God was called many things throughout by people who needed Him in a specific way. Here are just a few and where you can find them. I found a wonderful picture online this morning that will give you dozens more.  My point is indeed there is only One God.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (ESV) “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

I have a great series of books on my bookshelf – the All the series by Herbert Lockyer, DD. This information is a brief snip from All the Divine Names and Titles in the Bible

Elohim – Plurality in Unity

Elohim is used 3,000 times in the Bible, 2300 of those refer directly to God, the others in general refer to gods(little g).

El – the strong one. Some scholars believe the Elohim we are familiar with has this as its root word.

El Shaddai- The Almighty All-Sufficient God

Jehovah The Eternal, Ever-Loving One

Jehovah-Hoseenu – The Lord Our Maker (Psalm 95:6)

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord will Provide (Genesis 22:14)

Jehovah Rophi – The Lord, The Physician (Jeremiah 8:22)

Jehovah Nissi – The Lord our Banner (Exodus 17:15,16)

Emmanuel – God is with us (Matthew 1:23)

This book is a reference book that examines the names of God in the Bible and is summed up in this: God is to you what you need him to be.  This is not sacrilege, this is not me saying there are many ways to heaven, there are not.

The Holy Spirit will reveal himself to you if you ask God to live in you and you actually, really mean it.

Feel free to comment, add you own favorite God name and the scripture you found it in.

 2 John 1:7-10 (NKJV)
For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him;

Check your backgrounds and vocals

Unintended messages in you Facebook backgrounds? A friend just thanked me for a birthday wish and he used the brown emoji background you would see in a short post. The problem I had was a thank you with a screen full of poop emojis was a mixed message. All that was to say please be careful in selecting backgrounds and images that might be culturally or generationally sensitive.Mixed messages
Lest I belabor a point to the embarrassment of the reader, let me point out that the message in both cases was wonderful, but the background or the filler was counterpoint destructive.
First, I wished a Facebook friend a Happy Birthday with my usual Aaronic blessing and no graphics.  A person who shall remain nameless posted a brief Thank You and God Bless on my page which was nice. The problem occurred when this person selected a brown background (my favorite color point of fact) that had an emoji all over it that was essentially a smile pile of poop. I asked the person to change the background and they deleted the post and did a simple thank you. Now God tells me not to worry about the small stuff but I was concerned that the post might offend others.
The second is a wonderful song from Burlap to Cashmere that was wonderfully produced on numerous video channels and such. Again, wonderful lyrics, beautiful production but the riff sounds something like: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie.. It isn’t in the lyrics and I don’t think they intended to tell Christians to lie, but there it is.
BURLAP TO CASHMERE
Basic Instructions Lyrics
Basic instructions before leaving Earth…
For God so much loved the world,
That he gave His one and only son.
That whoever believeth in Him
Shall not die but live on.
(BRIDGE)
Living on…
Through the son
Peace almighty
Living on,
Let your heart go
To the one.
Yes the road narrow.
Yes the road is tough.
But whoever remaineth in Him
Shall not die, but lift up.
(BRIDGE)
Basic instructions before leaving Earth

Daily Service: Just Checking in

Day 7 Checking in

Just checking in Lord, just checking in.

I read a story a while ago about a man who visited a church on his way to and from work every day. He would sit in a pew in the back of the church, not the tidiest or cleanest guy you ever met, nothing to look at, nothing special. But the pastor heard him every day praying, and he just said, “just checking in Lord, just checking in”. Well, some time went by and the pastor didn’t see the old man at the church and he started asking around for him. He wound up at a hospital that had the hard cases, where people go to die. A nurse at one of the nurse’s station asked the pastor who he was looking for and he described him. The nurse smiled fondly and said, “oh that’s old Joe. He was with us, but he passed away a few days ago. I’m going to miss him praying for all of us, and he always started with “just checking in Lord, just checking in.”

The pastor turned away with tears in his eyes, made his way back to the church, sat in the pew Joe had always sat in. He looked up with tears rolling down his face and said, “Just checking in Lord, just checking in.”

Matthew 6:30 (KJV)
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

1-sam-16-7

Luke 16:15 ESV
So He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is prized among men is detestable before God.

John 8:15 ESV
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

Daily Bible Reading 24 November 2018

11/24/18 Daily Bible Reading: Ezekiel 33-34, 1 John 5, Proverbs 24

Ezekiel 33:7-9 (NKJV)
“So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me. When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Nevertheless if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.

Ezekiel 34:1-3 (NKJV)
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds: “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock.

shepherd1 John 5:1-5 (NKJV)
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Daily Service: Trust in ME

DAY 6 Trust in ME

TRUST IN ME, JUST IN ME

Not that creepy Kaa voice of a snake in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book (yes I read books, lots of them) But God telling me to trust Him through all of life’s ups and downs. You just need to trust that He is there and He Knows.

trust

Jeremiah 39:17-18 (ESV)
But I will deliver you on that day, declares the LORD, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but you shall have your life as a prize of war, because you have put your trust in me, declares the LORD.’”

Daily Bible Reading 23 November 2018

11/23/18 Daily Bible Reading: Ezekiel 30-32, 1 John 4, Proverbs 23

1 John 4:4-11 (NKJV)
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Beloved let us love one another

Daily Service: Ancient of Days

Day 5 Ancient of days

More on the music: See the worship song below. These are some of the verses it was based on.

Micah 5:2 (ESV)
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. {Psalm 90:2, Prov 8:22-23, John 1:1}

Psalm 90:2 (ESV)
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Proverbs 8:22-23 (ESV)
“The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.
Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

Blessing and honor, glory and power,
Be unto the Ancient of Days.
From every nation, all of creation,
Bows before the Ancient of Days.

Every tongue in heaven and earth
Shall declare Your glory,
Every knee shall bow at Your throne,
In worship,
You will be exalted, oh God,
And Your kingdom shall not pass away,
Oh Ancient of Days.

Your kingdom shall reign over all the earth,
Sing unto the Ancient of Days.
None can compare to Your matchless works,
Sing unto the Ancient of Days.

Tick Tock

Got our heels dug in
But time is draggin’ us toward
The time when time won’t matter anymore
They say life is but a vapor
Just a blip on a radar screen
Not the dates on your tombstone
But the dash in between
There’s just today, that’s all we got
There’s just today, that’s all we gotTick-tock, the past is locked
The future’s far away
You can’t go back, you can’t hurry it up
You gotta learn to live today
Tick-tock, it’s now o’clock
The little hand is ours
The second hand sweeps us around
And the Big Hand has the power
The Big Hand has the power

Well am I livin’ or am I dyin’
Will the world get another day?
I hear a baby cryin’, and I pluck out another gray
I’m always talkin’ about a change
But talkin’s all I’ve done
I’m gonna start tomorrow
But tomorrow never comes
There’s just today, that’s all we got
There’s just today, that’s all we got

Tick-tock, the past is locked
The future’s far away
You can’t go back, you can’t hurry it up
You gotta learn to live today
Tick-tock, it’s now o’clock
The little hand is ours
The second hand sweeps us around
And the Big Hand has the power
The Big Hand has the power

Always runnin’ late
Don’t procrastinate
Leavin’ in a hurry
Life is rollin’ on
Give me just a second
Wait another minute
Sleep another hour
See another day dawn
Call you next week
See you in a month
Celebrate a season
Now another year’s gone
Well there goes a decade, a century, millenium
And here comes eternity, eternity, eternity
Here comes eternity, eternity
What’s up with eternity?

Tick-tock, the past is locked
The future’s far away
You can’t go back, you can’t hurry it up
You gotta learn to live today
Tick-tock, it’s now o’clock
The little hand is ours
The second hand sweeps us around
And the Big Hand has the power
The Big Hand has the power
